Kwik Stix are a must have in the Wildcat studio. All ages love using them. I always have a variety of colors and metallics available in studio centers. The children keep a steady stream of ideas and inspiration creating with them. Their ease of use encourages creativity, and allows Wildcats to use their time efficiently. I enjoy hearing students share their process when layering colors and discovering new ones! Since Kwik Stix are mess-free, they allow creative fluency in the artmaking process.
Magic Stix triangular markers are a close second to Kwik Stix, with their vivid saturation. The triangular markers are comfortable to hold, and offer strong visual presentation without rolling off the table!
In our studio, the child is the artist. The question, “What do artists do?” drives our learning. The best artworks and projects have personal meaning and come from the imaginations of our artists. Kwik Stix are a studio favorite for skills like blending, shading, and layering colors. Scrolling through our page, the masterpieces created with Kwik Stix are vibrant and alive.
A remarkably successful lesson for Wildcats was inspired by Mondrian. Elementary artists work with a variety of precut paper strips to use as lines, and children use Kwik Stix for color blocking. Each composition is unique and striking. Another studio “hit” project uses a variety of colors and lines to illustrate owls. Children use Kwik Stix to overlap a variety of lines, layering the colors to create “feathers and tufts.”
I enjoy using the summer months to reflect and prepare for the upcoming school year. I have been working with a thinking partner to develop best practices and routines in our new studio space. We have been creating organizational solutions to fulfill our intentions of focusing on flexibility, mobility and visibility. My goal is to make the Wildcat’s studio a color-filled sanctuary for inspiring artists and fueling imaginations.
I would like to engage the community in creating next year through artistic initiatives with collaborative works that celebrate our diversity. I am brainstorming ways to celebrate our community, and honor our title as “Missouri’s Most Diverse Elementary School.” As a lifelong learner and creative, my commitment to art advocacy doesn’t end with the school year. I hope to become more experienced as I learn how to operate our newly acquired laser cutter! Stay tuned for a spectacular summer of studio adventures!
